BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Venturing downstate to the Barclay's Center, the D'Youville men's basketball team took on Emery & Henry in non-conference action. The Saints hung with the wasps for the first half of the game before their counterparts from West Virginia pulled away in the second half, handing the Saints an 83-60 defeat, their seventh loss in a row. The setback pushes D'Youville to 1-9 on the year.
A layup from sophomore forward Noah Denz and a jumper from junior guard Latrell Butler handed the Saints an early 4-0 advantage. Playing on the Brooklyn Nets' home court, both teams struggled to adjust to the NBA dimensions as they combined for only four field goals in the first six minutes of the game. After a layup from freshman guard Mason Putnam to give D'Youville a 6-4 lead, the Wasps rattled off 11 unanswered points to take control of the game at 15-6 with 12 minutes remaining in the half. Putnam's layup was the last time D'Youville held the lead in the game.
After trailing by as much as 16 points with under four minutes remaining in the half, the Saints managed to cut the E&H halftime lead down to 11 points. Junior forward Jaeger Martino helped the Saints narrow their deficit with a dunk and Putnam added three more points with a layup and a free throw before the halftime buzzer.
Putnam trimmed the spread to 40-31 early in the second half but a quick 12-1 scoring spurt from the Wasps saw the Saints trail by 20 points with 13:32 remaining in the game. From that point forward, the Saints were unable to get closer than 17 points of the E&H advantage.
Putnam led the way for D'Youville with 17 points on an efficient 7-for-11 clip from the field … His 63.6-percent shooting was a season-high as he reached double figures in scoring for the sixth time this season … As a team, the Saints struggled to find the bottom of the net, shooting 33.3-percent (24-72 FG) from the field and had further troubles from the NBA-range three-point arc, going 1-for-12 from downtown.
D'Youville's east-coast road trip continues Friday, Dec. 17 when they travel to the nation's capital for an East Coast Conference matchup at the University of the District of Columbia. Tip-off from UDC is set for 7 p.m.
