STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The D'Youville men's basketball team tipped off their 2021-22 campaign Friday evening against the College of Saint Rose on the campus of the College of Staten Island. Despite grabbing the game's first bucket, the Saints fell behind early eventually dropped the season opener, 101-65.
Freshman guard Nelson St. Louis opened his collegiate scoring account with a three-pointer to put the Saints ahead early at 3-0. The Golden Knights responded with a 10-0 run to quickly take control of the game. Senior forward Grant Beyer put an end to that run with a pull-up three in transition, but it was short-lived as Saint Rose rattled off six more unanswered points.
Just before the halfway point of the first half, the Golden Knights' advantage ballooned to 14 points at 24-10 and would expand to 22 points at 52-20 by halftime.
Junior forward Jaeger Martino got the Saints on the board in the second half with a right-handed layup on a drive from the top of the key. Freshman Rod Johnson picked up D'Youville's next field goal a couple of minutes later when freshman guard Mason Putnam found him open underneath the basket.
The Saints were led in scoring by Beyer (11 points, 4-7 FG) … Putnam also landed in double figures with 10 points (4-10 FG) … Sophomore forward Noah Denz collected team-highs in rebounds with five and assists with three … The Saints were edged on the boards, 38-33, despite grabbing 15 offensive rebounds … As a team, the Saints shot 36.3% (24-66 FG) from the field.
The Saints will return to the court tomorrow afternoon when they take on New Haven. Tip off, once more from the campus of the College of Staten Island, is set for 1 p.m.
