Saints Fall Short in Conference Opener to Queens College

FLUSHING, N.Y. — Queens College (NY) secured a narrow 1-0 victory over D'Youville on Saturday at Knights Field. The decisive goal came in the first half, and despite D'Youville's efforts, their four shots on goal were not enough to equalize. The Knights' defense held firm, limiting D'Youville to just one shot on target, preserving the shutout.
The first half saw a strategic defensive effort by D'Youville, highlighted by goalkeeper Alegra Black (Toronto, ontario / Rabun Gap) who made critical saves, including one in the 11th minute to deny Carly Koprowski. Despite D'Youville's attempts on goal, such as Eleonora Cecchini's (San Marino, Fiorentino, Italy Liceo delle Scienze Umane) shot in the 32nd minute, Queens took the lead in the 20th minute with a goal from Mia Goicochea, assisted by Lluvy Lewis. D'Youville showed resilience, maintaining pressure and limiting further scoring, but entered halftime trailing 1-0.
The second half began with D'Youville's Black making a crucial save in the 49th minute, denying a well-placed shot by the Knights' Jenna Rosenberger. Despite several attempts from D'Youville, including a shot by Hanna Dino (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Saint Paul Catholic) saved by the Knights' goalkeeper in the 65th minute, the visiting team could not find the back of the net. A late attempt by Cecchini in the 80th minute sailed over the top, and the half concluded with the Knights maintaining their 1-0 lead.
Black recorded four saves while playing the full 90 minutes in goal, facing 10 shots. Cecchini contributed two shots from the midfield position. Dino managed one shot on goal, providing an offensive threat. Hannah Fleming (Fairport, N.Y. / Fairport) added to the effort with one shot from her midfield role.
D'Youville dropped to 1-3-1 overall after the loss. The Knights improved to 1-3-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play.
Looking ahead, the D'Youville team will host Lake Erie College on September 23 in Buffalo, N.Y. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m., offering the home fans a chance to support their team in this upcoming contest.
