NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y.- The D'Youville University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader on Saturday by Molloy University.
Â
Molloy 9, D'Youville 8
Â
The Saints got off to a hot start in game one. After starter
Ryan McCarthy (Hamburg, N.Y.) worked a quick one-two-three inning in the top of the first, junior
Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) brought in the first run of the day with a single up the middle. Junior
Colby Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) followed with a double down the left field line to bring in the second run of the inning. Junior
Jonathan Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y.) then reached on an error and junior
Garett Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) grounded out to plate two more runs and give DYU a 4-0 lead at the end of the first.
Â
McCarthy cruised through another one-two-three inning in the top of the second and worked around two singles in the third to keep Molloy off the board going into the fourth. The Lions got on the board in the top of the fourth with a pair of two-out hits to cut the Saints' lead to 4-1. They poured on four more in the top of the fifth, giving them a 5-4 lead and knocking McCarthy out of the game.
Â
DYU answered back in the bottom of the fifth when a double from redshirt junior
Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y.) set up an RBI single from senior
Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario) to level the game at 5-5. However, Molloy capitalized on some sloppy play from the Saints in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs on two errors, two hit by pitches, and a wild pitch to take an 8-5 lead.
Â
DYU would not go down quietly, though as
Colby Wilson cranked a solo homer to center field to make it 8-6 and
Garett Wilson hit a sacrifice fly to cut it to 8-7. In the bottom of the seventh, Boucher doubled to set up an RBI single from Morris to knot the game up at 8-8. However, Molloy retook the lead for good on a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth. The Saints got two men on with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but they couldn't cash in and the Lions sealed the game one win.
Â
Molloy 15, D'Youville 2
Â
Molloy struck first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first off DYU starter Ty Gracyzk
(Buffalo, N.Y.). In the bottom of the first, sophomore
Derek Onevelo (Buffalo, N.Y.) led off with a single and came around to score on a base hit from
Colby Wilson to tie the game at 1-1. Molloy went back in front with an RBI double in the top of the second.
Â
The Saints had a scoring chance in the bottom of the second after Simpson reached on an error and senior
Dillon Crook (Liverpool, N.Y.) doubled, but they were unable to score. The Lions tacked on two more runs in the third and one more in the fourth to extend their lead to 5-1.
Â
Crook led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches, but DYU couldn't bring him in and the score remained 5-1. Molloy poured on five runs in the sixth and five in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Redshirt sophomore
Cooper Cefaratti (Williamsville, N.Y.) ripped an RBI triple into the right center field gap in the bottom of the seventh to make it 15-2, but the Lions went on to secure the victory.
Â
D'Youville falls to 6-9 in the ECC and 12-30 overall. They will close out their four-game set with Molloy on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
