Offense Slows as Saints are Swept by Spartans

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The D'Youville University Softball team ran into a tough opponent as they fell twice to the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans on Friday afternoon. The Saints dropped game one 8-1 then were defeated 8-0 in game two.

The Spartans offense quickly took control of the game as they jumped up 2-0 in the top of the first inning. Offense halted there until the Spartans added another run in the third and two more in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 5-0.

The Saints offense picked up in the bottom of the fifth as Shannon Howes (Palgrave, Ontario, Canada / St. Thomas Aquinas) led off the inning with a triple to left centerfield. Sophia Arno (Clarence Center, N.Y. / The Brook Hill School) delivered the sacrifice fly to right field to score Howes and put the Saints on the board. Emily Przybysz (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier Central) followed behind with a single to left, but the Saints were held at one to end the inning.

The Spartan offense scored three more runs in the top of the seventh to bring the score to 8-1. D'Youville looked to come back in the bottom of the inning but were unable to gain any momentum as STAC took game one 8-1.

It was a defensive battle in game two as strong plays in the field from both sides held the game scoreless through four innings. The Spartans again got on the board first crossing one run off a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth. The Saints looked to fight back in the bottom of the inning as they got runners on second and third, but the inning would end before D'Youville could score.

St. Thomas Aquinas tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth to bring the score to 3-0 and then hit their stride in the top of the seventh as they put up five more runs to bring their lead to 8-0.

The fight was not over for the Saints as Laura Beck (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) doubled down the left field line to start the bottom of the inning, but the Spartans would escape any damage taking game two 8-0.
