Saints Erase Early Deficit, But Ultimately Fall to Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, P.A. – The D'Youville University baseball team fell to Millersville University by a score of 10-5 on Tuesday.

Millersville took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer off Saints' starter Rob Stephens (Seaford, N.Y.). Stephens walked three in the inning but was able to get out of the jam without allowing any more runs. The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when the Marauders hit another two-run homer to put DYU in a 4-0 hole.

Redshirt junior Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and junior Jonathan Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y.) ignited a rally for the Saints with a pair of singles to start the top of the fifth. Junior Colby Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) ripped a double to right field to bring home Hollins. Junior Garett Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) followed with an RBI groundout to cut Millersville's lead in half, 4-2.

The Marauders got a run back in the bottom of the fifth with two doubles off DYU reliever Austin Delgado (Orlando, Fla.) to make it 5-2. After base hits from junior Kevin Del Vecchio (Niagara Falls, Ontario) and junior Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) put runners in scoring position for the Saints in the top of the sixth, Hollins drove in a run with a groundout to cut the deficit to 5-3. Morris then came in to score on a wild pitch to make it a 5-4 game.

In the top of the seventh, Colby Wilson doubled for the second time, Garett Wilson walked, and redshirt sophomore Michael Huff II (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Senior Dillon Crook (Liverpool, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice to bring in the tying run, leveling the game at 5-5. Millersville responded with five runs on five hits in the bottom half of the inning to go back in front 10-5.

Freshman Jakob Denall (Clarence, N.Y.) threw a scorless frame for DYU in the bottom of the eighth to keep it at 10-5. Colby Wilson led off the top of the ninth with his third hit of the day, but the next three batters were retired and Millersville sealed the 10-5 victory.

D'Youville drops to 3-11 with the loss and will head to Seton Hill University for a four-game set beginning Friday at 1:00 p.m.
