DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Pushing their win streak to four games, the D'Youville University men's basketball team defeated Mercy University Friday evening by a score of 82-77.
The Saints (6-14, 4-7 ECC) were led by
Elisha Warren (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven) with 21 points and eight rebounds while
Noah Hutchins (Buffalo, N.Y./IMG Academy) and
Kevin Thompson (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon-St. Jude) each chipped in with 17 points.
Renard Fontes-Jules (Brockton, Mass./Olympus Sports Academy) had solid game facilitating the offense with seven assists while adding six rebounds.
The Mavs pulled out to a quick 16-11 lead in the first half of action, but an 8-0 run helped DYU get the 19-16 lead with 10:24 left until the break. Thompson started the run with a three-pointer followed by a tip-in from
Kayden Wells (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnetonka). The run was ended by a three-pointer from Warren off the dish from Fontes-Jules. Mercy was able to get the lead back on two more occasions before the Saints took a 35-29 lead into the half thanks to another three-pointer from Warren.
Coming out of the break, the team went tic-for-tat. It wasn't until the 10:44 mark before either team got more than a two-possession lead in the game.
Dawson Matsell (Hamilton, Ontario/Orangeville Prep) helped the Saints achieve that feat, knocking down a three-pointer while adding a free throw. Wells capped off the run with a bucket in the paint to make it 54-46. D'Youville saw their biggest lead of the game come with seven minutes left in regulation as Thompson knocked-down back-to-back three-pointers, both off passes from Hutchins.
DYU went 27-for-63 (42.9 percent) from the floor while Mercy went 28-for-51 (54.9 percent) from the field. The Saints cleaned up the boards, grabbing 39 rebounds to the Mavs' 24 rebounds.
The Saints will be back in action this Sunday, February 9th, as the travel to St. Thomas Aquinas College for a 3 p.m. tip.
