BUFFALO, N.Y. - As part of NCAA Native American Heritage Month, D'Youville University athletics proudly highlights men's basketball sophomore guard
Lucus Brown, whose deep connection to his Seneca roots continues to shape his identity, his purpose, and his presence on the court.
A member of the Seneca Nation from the Allegany Territory, Brown carries with him a culture rich in tradition, strength, and resilience. For him, Native American Heritage Month is a time to honor that legacy and the generations who helped shape the path he walks today.
"Native American Heritage Month means recognizing the history, culture, and contributions of Native Americans like me," Brown shared. "It's meant to shine a light on our traditions, our resilience, and our role in shaping the country."
Brown credits his heritage with molding him into both the person and athlete he is. The values he grew up with — humility, perseverance, and hard work — are central to how he approaches basketball each day.
"Being Seneca has made me a stronger person and basketball player. My heritage teaches me to work hard, stay humble, and never give up," he said. "On the court, I play with pride for my community, and it pushes me to compete, lead, and represent where I come from in a positive way."
Representing his community at D'Youville is something Brown carries with deep pride.
"It reminds me that I'm playing for more than myself. I'm carrying my community, my family, and where I come from."
His cultural teachings stay with him daily — especially the belief in humility and hard work. Those lessons continue to shape his approach to practice, competition, and leadership.
Brown hopes his journey inspires younger Native athletes, particularly those who face challenges similar to the ones he has witnessed in his community.
"I want to help break the cycle of addiction and poverty and help younger athletes know they can accomplish anything they put their minds to if they're willing to make sacrifices and work for it."
Among his many accomplishments, Brown is especially proud to be one of the first in his family to attend college — a milestone that reflects both personal dedication and the perseverance of his community.
D'Youville University athletics is honored to celebrate Brown's story and the strength of the Seneca Nation during NCAA Native American Heritage Month. His leadership, pride, and determination make him a powerful representative of both his heritage and the Saints community.
