BUFFALO, N.Y. — The D'Youville University men's soccer team fell to St. Thomas Aquinas College Saturday afternoon by a score of 7-0.
The first half began with D'Youville setting up defensively as
Matthew Solorio took position in goal. Early attempts to shift momentum included shots by
Jonathan Ghobrial and
Ethan Filbert, although both were off target. The Saints' defense was tested with multiple attempts from the Spartans, but Solorio managed to make several saves, holding off their early advances.
The half saw St. Thomas Aquinas take a lead with a penalty kick converted in the 18th minute. Despite efforts from D'Youville to respond, including a shot on target by
William Carroll-Baigrie, the STAC goalkeeper made the save. STAC extended their lead with a pair of goals, closing the half ahead 3-0.
The second half began with STAC quickly extending their lead in the 47th minute, putting pressure on the Saints.
Ethan Robinson nearly responded with a shot hitting the right woodwork in the 53rd minute, followed by another attempt that went over the top. However, the Spartans capitalized again, scoring in the 61st minute to make it 5-0.
Despite the efforts from D'Youville, including a saved shot from
Luca Mansfield-Osborne and a late attempt by
Alex Ward, they could not break through the STAC defense. The Spartans added goals in the 65th minute and in the 89th minute.
Solorio recorded five saves during his time in goal, with four saves coming in the first half.
Harry Cooke added two saves while facing nine shots in the second half. Robinson led the team's offensive effort with two shots. Carroll-Baigrie and Mansfield-Osborne each managed a shot on goal, contributing to the team's attacking attempts.
The Saints will host Daemen University at Dobson Field in Buffalo, N.Y., on October 22 at 7 p.m.
