BUFFALO, N.Y. – Back at it at Dobson Field, the D'Youville University women's lacrosse team halted their two-game skid with a 14-9 come-from-behind win over Mercyhurst University Tuesday evening.
The Saints (2-2) were led offensively by
Madison Handley (Lancaster, N.Y.) with five goals while
Madison Buck (Rochester, N.Y.) added four goals.
Sydney Gordon (Hamburg, N.Y.) and
Grace Grosso (Hull, Mass.) added two goals each with
Jillian Bernas (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) adding two points in the effort (1 goal, 1 assist).
Emily Fischer (Grand Island, N.Y.) got the offense started, winning four draw controls.
Lauren Parker (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the defense with four groundballs while
Lauren Smithers (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Parker each had two caused turnovers.
After falling in a 4-0 deficit, DYU got their first goal of the game at the 6:21 mark of the second quarter to make it 4-1. After the Lakers got one back, the Saints score two straight to make it 5-3 with 13 seconds left in the half. Handley scored the woman-up goal with Buck scored her first goal of the contest.
Mercyhurst scored the first goal of the second half but a 3-0 run by DYU tied the game up at 6-6. Buck started the run, scoring off the feed from Bernas. Bernas got in on the scoring action, finding the back of the net at the 11:02 mark if the frame. Grosso scored her first goal of the season, coming at 9:43 to tie the game up. Mercyhurst got their final lead of the game, scoring their seventh goal at the 4:07 mark of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Saints offense came alive by scoring five unanswered goals to make it 11-7 with 8:54 left in regulation. Buck book ended the scoring with Handley, Gordon, and Grosso also adding to their totals. The Lakers tried to get back into the game with two late goals but three goals by DYU helped salt the game away.
Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y.) went the distance in net, making 14 saves on the night.
The Saints cap off their five-game homestand to start the season this Saturday as they host Lock Haven University at 12 p.m.
