BUFFALO, N.Y. – There was an upset at College Center Sunday afternoon, as the D'Youville University men's basketball team knocked off No. 25 Mercyhurst University by a score of 62-58.
The Saints (1-3) were once again led by
Nasir Hammonds (Norfolk, Va.) who had 15 points and seven rebounds.
Nelson St. Louis (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) added nine points while
Noah Hutchins (Buffalo, N.Y.) had eight points and six dimes.
DYU saw a three-point deficit in the first three minutes of the game but
Luke Theisen (Lake View, N.Y) cashed in a three-ball off the assist from
Kevin Thompson (Buffalo, N.Y.). After trading a pair of buckets, the Saints regained the lead as Hammonds converted an and-one opportunity to put D'Youville up 16-14.
The Saints were able to maintain the lead for the remainder of the first half, taking a 33-25 lead into the break as Hutchins got the layup off as the clock struck zero.
Coming out of the break, the Lakers were able to cut Saints' lead to two points thanks in part to a three-pointer by Max Jusianiec to start the run. Mercyhurst was able to retake the lead at the 14:38 mark with a flush from Jeff Planutis.
The Lakers grew their lead to three points, having the 44-41 advantage from as Aidan Reichert. The Saints were able to tie the game up with a three-pointer from
Renard Fontes-Jules (Brockton, Mass.) off the feed from Hutchins. DYU was able to use the momentum, continuing to score the next five points including back-to-back baskets from Hammonds to make it 49-44 with just over eight minutes left in regulation.
DYU was able to maintain the lead thanks in part to Hammonds finding Thompson for a three-pointer.
The Saints went 23-for-54 (42.6 percent) from the floor and 7-for-14 (50 percent) from beyond the arc. The Lakers went 22-for-56 (39.3 percent) and 5-for-12 (41.7 percent) from three-point land. DYU had the slight edge on the glass, grabbing 36 rebounds to Mercyhurst's 35 rebounds.
D'Youville will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Canisus University tomorrow for an exhibition game.
