The D'Youville baseball team resumed East Coast Conference play on Saturday, April 3, falling in both ends of a doubleheader that concluded its three-game series with Mercy College. The Maverick bats led the way in the opener, 20-4, before pitcher Austin DeRosa silenced the D'Youville offense with a no-hitter in game two, 6-0. 

The pair of conference defeats extended the Saints' losing skid to seven games, with D'Youville sitting at a 2-9 record overall and a 0-5 mark in league play. The guest Mavericks improved to 6-3 on the season and 3-0 in the ECC. 

Game One Recap 

Three unearned runs in the first inning off two errors by the D'Youville defense gifted the Mavericks an early lead and Mercy would not look back, scoring at least three runs in each of their first three trips to the plate, including a four-run third inning. In the second inning, left fielder Nolan Giblin tripled down the left field line to drive in another run for Mercy, while, in the third, first baseman Anthony Murphy sent his second home run of the weekend, a two-run shot, over the right field fence to extend the Maverick advantage to 10-0. 

The Saints grabbed two runs  in the bottom of the fifth inning, as sophomore left fielder Josh Battaglia was plunked, setting up freshman shortstop Alex Dzimian to blast a two-run homer of his own to right-center. Dzimian's home run was his first collegiate round-tripper. 

D'Youville added another run with the bases juiced in the eighth inning, as senior first baseman Nick Jank took one for the team and was hit by a pitch to cut the deficit. 

In the ninth, Sophomore shortstop Nate Mucci tacked on the final D'Youville run of the day with a sacrifice fly ball to center, allowing senior right fielder Kevin Sanders to tag up and cross home. 

Sophomore pitcher Kyle Nash (1-1) got the nod in game one and was knocked around for nine earned runs on 11 hits while striking out three and walking one in 4.1 innings of work. Senior right-hander Bryce Little (3.1 innings) and sophomore right-hander Jared Glowniak (1.1 innings) each made outings in relief of Nash in game one.  

Game Two Recap 

In the seven-inning rematch, Dzimian (1-1) took the mound and held the Mavericks scoreless for the first four innings, the longest stretch of the week in which Mercy was held at bay. The Mavericks broke through in the fifth and sixth innings with three runs in each frame, highlighted by an RBI double off the bat of Miguel Ortiz Sanchez in the sixth.

Dzimian exited after 5.2 innings, striking out four batters, walking one, and being tagged with five earned runs on nine hits. Jank would finish up the game on the mound, allowing two hits and striking out one in 1.1 innings.

The D'Youville offense was left hitless in game two courtesy of right-hander Austin DeRosa, who fanned seven batters and walked two in his first career no-hitter.  

Notables – Sophomore Jeremy Glinski added to his conference-best 10 stolen bases, swiping three bags in Saturday's pair of setbacks ... Dzimian is the first Saint to homer this season.
