Principia Sweeps D'Youville in Wednesday Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Winter Haven, FL – The D'Youville baseball team was defeated in back-to-back games on Wednesday afternoon by the Principia Panthers 2-1 and 13-1.

The game was scoreless through the first three innings, as starting pitcher Tyler Siegmann (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) was dealing early on. In the bottom of the fourth, Principia was able to break the scoreless tie by putting two runs on the board, taking a 2-0 lead.

D'Youville had their first run cross the plate in the top of the sixth, as Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) led off the inning with a single. Two batters later, Justin Brackna (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) singled to move Haak to second and put a runner in scoring position. Patrick Mulligan (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) came up with two outs and reached base on an error, scoring Haak and cutting the deficit in half.

Despite scoring a run late, the Spartans were unable to make a comeback as they lost game one to Principia 2-1.

Both Haak and Brackna led the team in hits with two each. Siegmann went 4.0 innings in his first collegiate start. The freshman righty struck out three, allowing five hits and allowed just two earned runs.

Game two of the day was not as close as the first. The Panthers pulled out to a five-run lead in the top of the fourth before D'Youville answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) singled, followed by single from Mulligan to move Macrides to second. A Kevin Kabacinski (Buffalo, NY/St. Joe's) walk then loaded the bases as Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) walked to bring in Macrides for the team's first run.

Principia would then add eight runs in the next three innings to put the game away, defeating the Spartans in game two 13-1.

Haak again led the team with two hits in the game, with Macrides and Mulligan each recording one. On the mound, Haak got his first start of the season, allowing two earned runs. Matt Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) made his second relief appearance of the day, going two innings and allowing two earned runs.

The next pair of games for the Spartans comes tomorrow on Thursday, March 23 at 12pm and 3pm as D'Youville faces Crown.
