Diplomats Best Spartans in Second Day of Spring Training

Box Score

Winter Haven, NY – The D'Youville baseball team was defeated by the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats Sunday morning by the final score of 17-2.

Franklin & Marshall had a very strong offensive output on Sunday morning and got started early in the game. The Diplomats put eight runs on the board in the first two innings, going on to score nine in the next three for a 17-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) reached base with two outs on a single. In the next at-bat, he advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kevin Kabacinski (Buffalo, NY/St. Joe's) then came to the plate and hit a big double to left center field, scoring Hammer and giving the Spartans their first run.

Moving to the top of the seventh, Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) began the inning with a leadoff single. He advanced to second with a Mitchell Mason (Eden, NY/Eden) single and then third on a fielder's choice. Haak would then reach home as Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) hit a sac-fly to center, scoring Haak from third. However the Diplomat's lead was insurmountable for the Spartans as they fell 17-2.

Freshman Braden Bova (Lancaster, NY/Saint Mary's) was one of the top performers for D'Youville in the game. Coming in off the bench, Bova pitched 3.0 innings of relief, allowing three hits and striking out five batters. At the plate, Braden recorded his first two career hits.

The team nearly had as many hits as Franklin & Marshall with 11 compared to the Diplomat's 12. Haak led the team with three hits, while Mason and Bova each recorded two. Seven different players had hits for D'Youville. Freshman pitcher Justin Uhteg (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) started his first game for the Spartans and struck out five over three innings.

The next game for the men comes on Monday, March 20 as they play Principia at 3pm.
